Updates!

Hello! Sorry I haven't updated much recently. Been busy with the holiday and working on some things.

In good news, I've made some sales recently! It has been slow since I just started about one month ago, but it feels good to have some level of success.

I am on episode 18 in my Let's Play of Harvest Moon. I recorded the first episode for Suikoden but the sound was way too low so I'll have to re-record.

Final Fantasy XV An Action RPG?

Over at Edge, Yoshinori Kitase, the producer for Final Fantasy XIII-2, is saying the next numbered Final Fantasy game could be an action RPG.

"I think the nature of the franchise is to present something new each time. In the global market we see many players moving away from games that used turn-based systems toward what you might term an action-RPG."

Personally, why make this a numbered game? Final Fantasy has, traditionally, been a menu based RPG. When they have decided to really do something different, Square Enix has not numbered the game. This has spawned a series of games doing this! Look at Tactics or Dissidia. While I'm sure the vast majority of Final Fantasy gamers would still buy this, it makes me wonder, is the Square that made the classic Final Fantasy games dead?

Tax Breaks For Suckers

Been sitting here reading various news articles and I wanted to get another business blog post up. The Senate just recently passed a bill, here, that gives tax breaks for hiring unemployed veterans. Before I go any further, I am 159.99% for helping veterans find a job. The problem is that tax breaks do not help the underlying issues. If you cut your finger off a bandage isn't going to fix the problem. What's the issue?

IT'S THE DEMAND, STUPID!

Giving tax breaks to any company does nothing for the demand of products. I work in an office that supplies companies with office furniture and if we hired an extra person, what good would that do us?

Tax breaks are also deferred and that won't help a small business. Bringing on more workers has hard-costs, like payroll taxes and soft-costs such as training the individual. What good will that tax break do now?

Passing tax breaks like this are safe and feel good. Who doesn't love that?

Republicans are so focused on tax breaks that they won't look for better solutions. Democrats are so focused on tax issues for the rich that they miss the mark. I'm not one who believes the Government cannot help but they must find solutions for the real problem.

That brings up another question, what could the Government do to help demand? Trade is always great but we must be careful of other countries work standards so as not to hurt American workers. Will investing in infrastructure solve our issues? I don't know the answer to our problems, and to be honest, I am glad that I don't have to be the one to make these decisions. I wonder, could any of us citizens who throw peanuts from the sideline really come up with solutions for our countries problems?

Spotlight: Final Fantasy

Welcome to my first, in hopefully many, articles on past games! I want this series to focus on a game that either was important to me or did something important for gaming.

Final Fantasy is one of the most important Japanese Role Playing Games (JRPG) and one of the most influential. Today, JRPGs are in a tough spot in the American market because of the advancement of the Western Role Playing Game (WRPG) such as The Elder Scroll Series, Mass Effect and Fallout. That wasn't always the case though.

Background:

As many hardcore RPG fans know, Final Fantasy was made by a fledgling company called Squaresoft. They made a number of games on the Nintendo Entertainment System such as  3D World Runner and Rad Racer. While these games had some success, the company was not doing well financially. Thus, Final Fantasy was born. According to this article, the name Final Fantasy stemmed from Sakaguchi's plan to quit making video games if the game did not do well.

Story:

Final Fantasy told the story of the Light Warriors. The world is on the verge of destruction. The wind no longer blows, the seas crash and the earth decays. These four warriors mysteriously arrive with an Orb (crystal in later versions) of each element: fire, water, earth, and air.

What made Final Fantasy different was its long, epic story. Many gamers were used to simple games with simple stories. Mario had you rescuing a princess. Even though Zelda had a long back-story in its manual, the game had little story elements while playing. Final Fantasy had you rescuing the princess as the first quest of many. After finally defeating Garland, the

disgraced knight who captured the princess, I thought I had beat the game! No, my journey had just begun.

Venturing into the unknown, the heroes you created began unraveling the mysteries of the world. Saving the Elf King, meeting the council that told of the mysterious four fiends and meeting the legendary dragon Bahamut.

After defeating the four fiends and saving the land you learned a terrible secret, the fiends were sent here from the past! There was only one way to stop them, go into the past and kill them there! Venturing back into the very same spot where you saved the princess, the Light Warriors were sent into the past. Traversing this strange castle, the warriors met and fought each fiend and destroyed them. The truth would be revealed to young gamers when they reached the center of the castle. Garland had been sent back in time by the four fiends, when he arrived back in time he would then send the four fiends to the future creating a time loop and letting him live forever. How this paradox started, who knows but it was time for the final battle with Garland who was now the demon Chaos! The world saved and the time loop destroyed, the heroes could now rest.

Gameplay:

Final Fantasy had you start your quest by choosing four classes for your party. You could choose the brutal Fighter, the nimble Thief, the tough Black Belt, the healing White Mage, the mysterious Black Mage and the versatile Red Mage. This allowed such a great deal of customization and re-playability. After meeting Bahamut and completing his quest, your warriors would be promoted to upgraded versions of their base class.

The combat system used a turn based menu system and a primitive combat screen. There were some things that gamers learned real fast about the fighting. The people towards the top of your party would be attacked more than the bottom. If two people attacked the same monster and the first person killed them, the second person would waste their turn attacking the darkness! This was changed in later versions but this did add an element of strategy.

Each new town had better equipment for sale and spells. There were no magic points in Final Fantasy. Spells were divided into spell levels and as you gained levels, you could caster higher level spells and more of them. Your mages could only know three spells for a spell level. This made you choose which spells you wanted carefully and made sure to ration their use during long dungeons.

Final Fantasy had a very deep combat system for its era. Item choices, spell choices and class choices let the player have a engaging experience each time they played.

Legacy:

Final Fantasy was very popular when it came out and brought gamers a series of memorable games. Many elements from the original Final Fantasy have be reused in other games. The idea of elemental crystals, many musical themes and minor quirks would show up in the series. If you haven't, pick up this game or one of its many remakes. Check out this Let's Play to see what the game is like!

Strike Out!

Giving an update for today! I went to my usual stores/places today and struck out! I ran into a few SNES and Sega Master games but they were all sports games! Gah. Well, I'll be trolling Ebay for deals today and using Craigslist as well.

I've been messing around with Fraps and emulators but it is causing huge slowdowns when I go to record. My computer is ~1 year old so I'm not sure why. I'll try and figure it out. Thanks for viewing and don't forget to check out my new stuff in my store!

Let's Plays or Video Reviews

So I've been thinking of ideas for more gaming related content on my site. I've been running two ideas so far, a let's play or a video review.

If you're unfamiliar with a let's play, basically, it's a series of videos a person playing a video game while giving commentary. Go to YouTube and type in "let's play" in the search and you'll get an idea what it will be like.

Reviews are also something I've considered for games that I have in stock for sale. I've thought though, if I'm going to do a review and need footage, why don't I just let's play the game?

I could probably do a video review much quicker and easier than a let's play. A let's play requires constant updating which I might not have the time for. I could generate a lot of videos on the weekend and then upload a video each day during the week but my time is somewhat limited during the weekend for that.

If you have a suggestion, email me overstockretro@gmail.com or leave a comment. You can also check out my twitter and send me a suggestion there. Thanks!

The Final Fantasy Matchstick Sword Killer

From the Sun Newspaper, it looks like some jail guards have been trolled and an inmates little hobby might land him in hot water (hot coffee?).

According to this short article, an inmate has been piecing together matchsticks into "razor sharp" deadly weapons. Maybe someone will get a splinter in the eye! Never know.

Squall's gunblade is quoted as having a "fully revolving barrel." Something tells me this gunblade will be just as effective as Squall's gun was!
